What About Salman Pak?

What happened to Salman Pak? The name of this place was all the rage in 2001. To refresh those of you with short memories, Salman Pak was a secret training base for Iraqi military and intelligence services. Everything from specific mission and operation training to more broad suicide, kidnapping, and hijacking training went on there. When was the last time that you read the name Salman Pak in the MSM? Or when was the last time you heard about it in a national news program? Salman Pak represents the smoking gun linking Saddaam Hussein [I really don’t care if I spelled his name wrong] to the terrorist attacks of Sept 11, 2001.

I bring this up because today Sen. Robert (I was in the kinder gentler KKK) Byrd was questioning SECDEF nominee Robert Gates.

RKKKB: In your estimation, who was responsible for the attacks of 9-11 in New York, Saddaam Hussein or Osama bin Laden?

RG: Osama bin Laden

RKKKB: In your estimation, who was responsible for the attacks of 9-11 in Washington DC, Saddaam Hussein or Osama bin Laden?

RG: Osama bin Laden

RKKKB: In your estimation, who was responsible for black plague, Saddaam Hussein or Osama bin Laden?

RG: Osama bin Laden

The former white hooded one neglected to follow up with the most important question:

MM: Was there any connection between the murderous despotic Iraqi regime and the attacks on New York and Washington, DC on Sep 11, 2001?

What would Gates have said? Would he have said something like this:

RG: As yet I have not been briefed on specifics of the connections between Iraq and Al Qaeda. However, it is a matter of public record that former Iraqi intelligence officers told the FBI and other US agencies of the training at Salman Pak to hijack US aircraft for suicide missions. This was reported in the DNC newsletter, the New York Times, in Oct 2001. There is also the testimony of the deputy Prime Minister of Iraq, Mr. Barham Salih. He affirms the connection between the state sponsored Ansar al Islam, Al Qaeda, and the Baathist regime. Even those within your own party, Congressman Chris Carney, were reported to have reviewed intelligence material and came to the conclusion that there was definitely a connection between Saddaam and Al Qaeda. I believe that there is indeed an overwhelmingly positive link between Iraq and Al Qaeda.

Of course, Byrd never let the truth get in the way of a good sound bit for the evening news.
